PINGU: a vision for neutrino and particle physics at the South Pole
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Precision IceCube Next Generation Upgrade (PINGU) is a proposed lowenergy in-fill extension to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. With detection technology modeled closely on the successful IceCube example, PINGU will provide a 6Mton effective mass for neutrino detection with an energy threshold of a few GeV. With an unprecedented sample of over 60 000 atmospheric neutrinos per year in this energy range, PINGU will make highly competitive measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters in an energy range over an order of magnitude higher than long-baseline neutrino beam experiments. PINGU will measure the mixing parameters q23 and Dm32 2 , including the octant of q23 for a wide range of values, and determine the neutrino mass ordering at s 3 median significance within five years of operation. PINGU’s high precision measurement of the rate of nt appearance will provide essential tests of the unitarity of the 3×3 PMNS neutrino mixing matrix. PINGU will also improve the sensitivity of searches for low mass dark matter in the Sun, use neutrino tomography to directly probe the composition of the Earth’s core, and improve IceCube’s sensitivity to neutrinos from Galactic supernovae. Reoptimization of the PINGU design has permitted substantial reduction in both cost and logistical requirements while delivering performance nearly identical to configurations previously studied.

Neutrino oscillation studies with IceCube-DeepCore
IceCube, a gigaton-scale neutrino detector located at the South Pole, was primarily designed to search for astrophysical neutrinos with energies of PeV and higher. This goal has been achieved with the detection of the highest energy neutrinos to date. At the other end of the energy spectrum, the DeepCore extension lowers the energy threshold of the detector to approximately 10 GeV and opens the...

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is the world’s largest high energy neutrino telescope, using the Antarctic ice cap as a Cherenkov detector medium. DeepCore, the low energy extension to IceCube, is an infill array with a fiducial volume of around 30 MTon in the deepest, clearest ice, aiming for an energy threshold as low as 10 GeV and extending IceCube’s sensitivity to indirect dark matter sear...
متن کاملDetermination of the neutrino mass ordering by combining PINGU and Daya Bay II
The relatively large measured value of θ13 has opened various possiblities to determine the neutrino mass ordering, among them using PINGU, the low-energy extention of the IceCube neutrino telescope, to observe matter effects in atmospheric neutrinos, or a high statistics measurment of the neutrino energy spectrum at a reactor neutrino experiment with a baseline of around 60 km, such as the Day...

We discuss design considerations and simulation results for IceRay, a proposed large-scale ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrino detector at the South Pole. The array is designed to detect the coherent Askaryan radio emission from UHE neutrino interactions in the ice, with the goal of detecting the cosmogenic neutrino flux with reasonable event rates. Operating in coincidence with the IceCube neutri...

This paper presents a review of the history, motivation and current status of high energy neutrino telescopes. Many years after these detectors were first conceived, the operation of kilometer-cubed scale detectors is finally on the horizon at both the South Pole and in the Mediterranean Sea. These new detectors will perhaps provide us the first view of high energy astrophysical objects with a ...
